Alex "Hitch" Hitchens is a professional matchmaker. His clients are men who think that they could never have a chance with the girl they've been pining for. These men come to him explaining their situation, and he makes an opportunity for a relationship arise. While helping a client with his own love-interest, Hitch meets a gossip-columnist who may just change his outlook on love, though it's what he's been dealing with every day of his life.
Review
First off, be warned that this movie is a chick-flick. It's one of those sappy, lovey-dovey movies, and it is entirely centered around someone's love-life. If you can't sit through these movies, I would not recommend "Hitch" to you. If you're a fan of chick-flicks however, you will probably enjoy this, because, to be honest, it is one of the more bearable ones I've seen. As far a chick-flicks go, this is not such a bad film; as far as the realm of other movie possibilities goes, it isn't the greatest.
Like any chick-flick, this film really doesn't have much of a plot. If you've seen any other chick-flick ever in your lifetime, you will be able to predict this story easily, and be 100% right, because the basic plot is the very tired and abused boy-meets-girl scenario, except with different characters and a different dilemma. I was heartily disappointed by the lack of depth to the story, and by the use of the same-basic-plot that I've seen a million times. The entire film was centered around dating and the dating lives of people in their twenties and thirties, and quite frankly I found it to be vapid and shallow.
The acting in this film, contrary to the storyline, was quite excellent. Will Smith did a great job playing Alex Hitchens, and Eva Mendes plays Hitch's female opposite, Sarah. All of the actors and actresses in this film played their parts quite excellently, and it was not their flaw that made this movie somewhat lousy, but many flaws in the basic outline of the story. Every once in a while, Hitch would say something unexpected and philosophical, which seemed somewhat out of place in this superficial movie, but I really liked some of the lines he said, one was "begin each day as if it were on purpose". There was another line I really liked that the editor said to Sarah, "there is more to life than watching other people live it", and those two lines were without a doubt my favorite part of the movie.
Conclusion
If you're interested in a film that is new and exciting and makes you wonder what's going to happen next, this is not the film for you. There are some very amusing parts in it, and some good quotes, and I might watch this movie again with my friends, but all in all, it is a chick-flick, and that really puts a damper on things. With such talented actors and actresses, they could have made a better movie if only the storyline had been better. It was entertaining, and the tips that were given by Hitch weren't all that bad, and the dialogue was good, but the story as a whole was lacking. I personally enjoyed the ending, and I would probably watch this if I was feeling particularly sappy, as it is a romantic movie. This movie wasn't bad for a chick-flick, but it wasn't a film masterpiece either.
